Program Note:
Growing up in a family with Irish Catholic roots, Catholic spirituality was a part of the fabric of my life. The Ave Maria prayer is one that I know by heart and the ritual of the rosary has been an important comfort to me. I have always been particularly drawn to the figure of Mary, for both her importance in the life of Christ and for her mysteriousness. Mary is often present but we don’t always get to know what she is thinking or feeling directly through Biblical texts. In this setting, I wanted to express the comfort and reassurance that the figure of Mary in particular and mothers in general offer and also give voice to the struggles humans feel that often lead them to think of Mary.

Text:
Ave Maria, gratia plena, Dominus tecum.
Benedicta tu in mulieribus,
et benedictus fructus ventris tui, Iesus.
Sancta Maria, Mater Dei,
ora pro nobis peccatoribus,
nunc et in hora mortis nostrae. Amen.
Translation:
Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee.
Blessed art thou among women,
and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God,
pray for us sinners,
now and in the hour of our death. Amen.
