Performance Note:

In this piece, the vocal writing is based off of the original chant. It was composed for a beginning choir that needed to build confidence in order to sing out and sing well. The piano part is designed to do this by supporting the singers without subtracting from their performance. It is structurally a strophic song, so the pianist is free to improvize with other registers and rhythms during verses 2 and 3. Verses 1 and 3 are in English, while verses 2 and 4 are in Latin. This is so that the listeners are prepped with the meaning of the chant before hearing the original text.

Text:

O come, O come, Emmanuel,
And ransom captive Israel;
That mourns in lonely exile here,
Until the Son of God appear.
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to thee, O Israel.

Veni, veni Emmanuel!
Captivum solve Israel!
Qui gemit in exilio,
Privatus Dei Filio.
Gaude, gaude, Emmanuel
Nascetur pro te, Israel.

O come, Thou Wisdom from on high,
Who order all things far and nigh,
To us the path of knowledge show,
And cause us in her ways to go.

Veni, O Sapientia,
Quae hic disponis omnia,
Veni, viam prudentiae
Ut doceas et gloriae.
Gaude, gaude, Emmanuel
Nascetur pro te, Israel.
