Performance Note:

This piece is designed to sound like the calming waves experienced while sitting on a beach. It revolves around only two chords: F7 and Bb. Oftentimes, these chords appear with suspensions that are meant to keep an ethereal color within the piece. The waves are always moving in and out, just like our breath. I really like a term a friend of mine said to me with regards to this: “Peace” is meant to be “breath forward". I hope to promote a feeling of stillness throughout the piece that is still supported by breath that moves in and out, like the waves. Likewise, the dynamics are always ebbing back and forth. I may have included too many dynamic markings, but they are meant to convey this feeling, which is similar to the waves of the ocean. At the beginning of “Peace” I have included this instruction: During the first four introductory bars, the choir can softly be "shh"ing, "ssss"ing, and saying "peace" in the style of waves, pushing and pulling... There are times when these sounds are also notated within the piece.

PERUSAL SCORE

Text:

Peace flows into me
As the tide to the pool by the shore;
It is mine forevermore,
It ebbs not back like the sea.

- Sara Teasdale (1917)
