Add to Cart

Product Description:

PDF score of Volume

Performance Note:

This piece is meant to be played in a very expressive manner. All of the feathered beams and tremolos in the piano are meant to be a tool for textural expression rather than mechanically exact figures. Generous pedal should be given throughout the piece, and the performers can feel free to take artistic liberties with tempo and phrasings as needed.

Instrumentation:

Mezzo Soprano & Piano
Text by Carolyn Quick
4.5 minutes
Vocal Range: Bb3-F#5

Recording:

Score:

Perusal Score

Text:

Volume

My hair is shorter
now.
Like fields of wheat, once a voluminous
cascade
it used to rove in the wind–
hanging linens,
fluid
like ribbons–
as I,
a golden wash
roared passion into
incandescence;

Before,
my mind wandered paths that lead to
Samson,
Delilah’s curse and I
feared–
feared the loss of the power of my
roar;

But now,
I merely question:
which tongue has coaxed my sullen mane
to remain
in spite of cords clean-cut and
silenced–

Perhaps it was only mine.
